I Hate My Job Because of Unreal Expectations Part V

Continuing from Part IV of the series Unreal Expectations.

Do expectations bring appropriate behavior?

One of the big problems with expectations is how abstract they are and how complex the real world is.

An expectation is usually thought of as quite simple, almost all beliefs are quite simple. Image + emotions = belief.

But the world where the expectation is suppose to show up, well that’s quite complex.

Think of all the conditions and actors involved in…anything. In business there is

  • money passing back and forth between departments, firms, government agencies.
  • There’s a blizzard of paperwork being filed each second.
  • Stock prices are going up and down.
  • Currency is running in and out of countries.
  • Computers are chugging, programs are running, keystrokes.
  • There decisions and changes of mind.
  • People have had bad sushi or water for lunch.
  • Some are popping antacids.
  • It could be a nice day or a rainy day.
  • An argument with the Misses or an  unexpected repair bill could be on someone’s mind.
  • The city could be in the process of changing a major policy, etc…etc…

All while you are expecting things to go specifically as they look like, in your head. Are you mad? Is your boss mad?

Chances are the environment you want your expectation to POOF into, it’s not going to be like you imagined.

Chances are you really didn’t think too much about the moments before your POOF and you haven’t considered the consequences of getting your POOF from the perspective of those around you.

That goes for you, your boss and your coworkers.

So…I hate my job because my expectations are too abstract in a complex world.
