We continue from Part II of the Unreal Expectations Series.
So having expectations do not ceteris paribus make what you want happen. It’s true for you as much as it is true for coworkers, your bosses, your clients, and your competitors.
It’s actually a little like childhood magic.
Magic, as we’ve learned as children was when you say the magic words and perhaps do an appropriate wrist flick with baton, I mean wand, then POOF what you want (your expectation) becomes reality.
With magic, there’s no…
- no process
- no shuffling of resources
- no give or take
- no negotiation
- no movement of energy or matter
- no changes or alterations of information…
Just POOF, beautiful woman sitting on my couch, automatically wired to love and devote herself to me as she stares alluringly at my Chong Li sized pectorals.
Expecting our expectations to do that is the same.
Mental image, check…okay waiting for the universe to belch out that which I wish at the right time, in the right state, under the right conditions, as well as me feeling the right way as I get it.
So, there’s another one. I hate my job because of magical thinking.
Doesn’t it seem that’s what the boss is doing sometimes?
Ummm, to be honest, don’t we do this an awful lot ourselves, even to ourselves?
