Getting the Boss the RIGHT Numbers

How do you use numbers effectively around a bad boss?

Continuing from the post, Numbers Lie

How do you find the right numbers for el jefe, who’s a blubbering idiot when dealing with anything remotely arithmetic?  Hate your boss all you want, but if he or she is working with ineffective numbers, your work may be sunk before you even begin.

Figure out what the underlying assumption your boss is working from. Take a step back, don’t start off thinking your boss is an idiot. That’ll taint what you’re doing with emotions that may lead you astray here.

Why does it make sense that these numbers were chosen?

What numbers were not chosen, why were they perhaps rejected (on their own merits, not because they were inconvenient to a pet project…even though that’s the case sooooo often)?

What numbers say something different? How can they be a warning to continuing on this path or with this methodology?

Can you track those numbers easily, without looking like you are being a spoil sport?

Get this right and you’re a hero.  Wait, even better, you’re COMPETENT!
