Jessica Pryce-Jones has a post on worth reading at Psychology Today’s Blog. The idea: “my boss hates me.” My boss hates me | Psychology Today
What really stands out for me her introduction of an equation to help you assess whether you are in a low trust environment.
By no means run around using it everyday. By no means make an excel spreadsheet and start tracking how your work environment scores…though imagine an office with a trust value stock ticker going, how would that effect behavior? I digress. The point is, it’s an interesting in a food for thought kind of way.
An equation to see if you have trust issues at your place of employment…
Reliability (10) + Openness (10) + Clarity (10) + Concern for others (10)
divide by Self-interest 10
Everything is in a 1 to 10 scale. The 1 being low and the ten being the perfect example (if we had zero we’d could potentially run into a divide by zero scenario, very bad, very very bad). What’s the reliability rating? How much openness is there? Are people clear, transparent about motive and desires? Are people expressing and showing their concern for people outside themselves? All that is over how much the person seems to want or need this.
Sometimes it’s great to have a pseudo-objective tool to help you figure things out. Or, in this case, help you signal there’s something amiss. Jessica Pryce-Jones (love her name) says if the score is below 1.5, you have a situation on your hands.
Go ahead, take it for a test drive. Try it on a good relationship or a good situation. Then try it on your troublesome one.
Is it useful? Inquiring minds want to know…and I’m inquiring into your mind, because…I wanna know.
